Bill Joyce | | Wow Katie...
I believe you will need to provide a little more information.
Who or what is your market segment? How large is your product? How large is your marketing budget? What is your time-line for the sales cycle - will there be need for multiple promotions?
For some it is a simple freebe like a white paper. This provides two benefits - the potential buyer gets to see the depth of your knowledge (gets to know you a little more) and you get time with the client outside of the cold sales event.
For some it is a trinket at a convention that they use and look at finally getting them to call.
Like the old fisherman said. You can cast your net anywhere but it would be best that you cast it over the fish...
Please give us more detail so we can comment in depth...

Kurt Schweitzer | | The whole point of a promotional item is to trigger a favorable association in its possessor's mind. When they look at the doo-dad, they think of you.
What does your target market like? Mine tends to like key fobs and patches. T-shirts are also popular, especially if they have "rat-fink" type characters, but that's just among my target. Yours will have different tastes.
Know your target!
